On Friday, we got news that we would be swearing in as PCVs four days earlier than expected and moving to site two days earlier than planned. So in just over a week, I will be arriving at my permanent site! We will be receiving confirmed permanent site details on Thursday. I feel like I have so much to do this week!
On Saturday, we held a big farewell party for all of the host families. I signed up for the morning cooking shift, which meant getting picked up at 5:30am. We peeled, chopped, and cooked for six hours, and probably ending up feeding over 200 host family members. Our LCFs performed traditional songs and several local dance groups came to perform. Two PCTs gave a speech on behalf of our SA28 cohort, one in English and the other in Sepedi.
My host parents had to go to a funeral in the morning so they were about 30 minutes late. When they arrived, my host mom found me right away and surprised me by giving me a traditional outfit she made for me. Lots of the PCTs received these outfits Saturday, but mine was different from everyone else’s – and she had kept me completely in the dark! She helped me tie the traditional skirt on and wrapped my head with a matching piece of material. I very much appreciate that my host parents have taken me into their home as if I was their own child, and while I’m ready and excited to move to permanent site, I will miss them both dearly.
